Professor Michael Kirby, MBBS, LRCP, MRCS, FRCP

I qualified at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, and subsequently held a Cardiology Registrar appointment at QEII Hospital, Welwyn Garden City. I joined a medical practice in Letchworth in 1973.

Past appointments include two cardiology sessions at the district general hospital and advisor to the Manulife Company. The practice provides an open access echocardiography service for patients with heart failure for the North Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust.

I am an associate member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Editorial responsibilities include the British Journal of Diabetes & Vascular Disease, British Journal of Cardiology, Geriatric Medicine, Health & Ageing International Journal of Clinical Practice, and Editor in Chief of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Journal. I also hold membership of several NHS advisory boards.

As a founder member of the vocational training scheme I have been actively involved in teaching over many years. I was appointed Medical Director of the Hertfordshire Primary Care Research Network in 1998-2007. The network received funding over the years from the NHS and had an extensive programme of work.

Further appointments include Visiting Professor to the Faculty of Health & Human Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire and the Prostate Centre, London.

Special interests include cardiology, diabetes, osteoporosis, men's health and urology. Publications include more than two hundred clinical papers and twenty-three books.

When away from work I can be found cycling the lanes of Hertfordshire.
